The government of Japan has contributed $1.2 million USD to The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to set up a new project “Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Support for Crisis Affected Communities in Hadramout”.

The new project will help to improve WASH services in five healthcare centres across two areas in the Hadramout region, Tarim and Al Abr, through the rehabilitation of sanitation facilities and systems development for medical waste management.

Years of ongoing conflict and climate change have resulted in widespread damage to WASH infrastructure across the Hadramout region, leaving many communities vulnerable to disease outbreaks because of poor waste management and sanitation systems.

The newly funded project comes at a critical time with the number of refugees and displaced families fleeing to Hadramout continuing to rise because of long-running civil conflict across Yemen, putting additional pressure on an already overwhelmed and damaged WASH infrastructure.

“This new project builds upon existing success from UNDP’s recently completed 3-year WASH project – also funded by Japan – which improved local water and waste management systems and service delivery for over 850,000 people in Aden and Mukalla,” explains Auke Lootsma, UNDP Resident Representative in Yemen.

“These services are critical to a sustainable recovery in Yemen, building a healthier foundation for Yemenis to rebuild their lives free from the risk of disease.” Lootsma added.

This comes after International Rescue Committee (IRC) called out world leaders for insufficient funding of Yemen’s humanitarian response plan in September 2021 and builds on upon a well-established partnership between UNDP and the Government of Japan.

The project will not only improve Yemeni’s access to adequate healthcare facilities, but also will help to build the economy by increasing productivity and stability.
