Several lawmakers behind a bill that would eliminate Indiana's wetlands protections — and remove costly mitigation requirements for developers — have close ties to the building industry that critics say should raise red flags. The legislation could save developers and homebuilders tens of thousands of dollars in wetlands mitigation costs per project. But opponents say getting rid of the wetland protections could increase flooding, degrade water quality and destroy wildlife habitat.
